CYBERBULLYING

One concrete example of “bad behavior” in the online space is cyberbullying. There was a sixteen year old boy who was cyber bullied on Facebook over a period of 8 hours. The event seemed to be very traumatic for the boy and he had to be hospitalized in an adolescent psychiatric ward for almost a month. It has affected him mentally and his parents say that he will never be the same again. The sources don’t say who was involved nor if the bullies got punished or not but we can infer that some adults on Facebook probably said something really negative to the boy which caused him to act like that. Technically there was a financial loss to the parents of that boy because they have to see a psychiatrist to help with his mental health. The boy also has to suffer through this for the rest of his life if he doesn’t get the proper help he deserves. The kid’s reputation is probably ruined online because of the cyberbullying he went through. By the looks of it, it looks like they probably leaked some information about the boy that he did not want to be published. From this we can learn that the internet is not a safe place for anyone no matter what age they are. If you are underage it is best to let your parents know what is going on in your social media accounts. It is also best to let them know if you are getting cyberbullied online. It is also the parents responsibility to check up on their children and see if they are doing okay or not because most children refuse to tell their parents. There is also an option for parents to control their children’s social media accounts if they are under the age of 18 and I feel like this would be a great idea to check up on their children. This would lower the chances of children becoming victims of cyberbullying. What I would do to become less victimized online is make my socials private and only add people that I know and am close to. I would not share any personal information with anyone online and go to suspicious group chats. The best idea would be to block the bullies on all social media but if they keep harassing you, it is best to report the account. There is not much you can do to internet trolls since they keep coming back but most will leave you alone if you ignore them.
