The Future

3D Printing

I think that in the grand scheme of things that 3D printing is going to be something that many people will have in their homes. 3D printing is a device that can take information that can take a 3D rendered graphic and turn it into a real product using heat, filament and a 3D printer. You can make anything your heart desires with 3D printing. The 3D printer works similarly to a paper printer by slowly building up layer upon layers of plastic into the shape of the thing that you are trying to create. The most popular 3D printing software is Auto Desk 3DS max. The most popular 3D Printer is a Creality Ender 3. This is already product available to the public. 3D printing was invented by Chuck Hull in 1981. This solves the problem of having to buy small things for around the house that you do not want to have to go to the store to buy. Imagine a world where you never have to buy a command hook again. You could just print one at home. Your light switch cover broke no worries you can make one at home. You lost the extension for your vacuum that you love you can make that too. Many of the little things that we take for granted when they are working well are things that you can fix yourself with a 3D printer. I think the number one drawback from this technology would be the plastic being used. Unless you are recycling your own filament you are creating a higher demand for plastic which is already a huge problem. Plastic pollution is a huge problem in our world and 3D printing is not counter acting that at this time. If this technology was widespread companies would no longer need to supplement plastic items in their packaging but give the instructions to the customer who is bought the product to make with their own printer. I think that if we figure out, he plastic problem this would be a very helpful and rewarding development for society.

Mobile Apps

YouTube is a video watching and posting app it is really marketed to anyone. When I say that this app is marketed towards anyone, I mean it. YouTube uses an algorithm to suggest videos for you it takes what you have watched in the past and suggests content to you that thinks is similar to what you watch so that you do not have to search through the app if you do not want to. I use this app every day for content watching and the algorithm works for me. Not everyone’s algorithm works for them but that is ok.  You can watch pretty much anything on YouTube that is not explicit. They also have options that parents can put on their children’s accounts that only allows the children to watch things targeted and okay for children to watch.  The way that the publishers of this app generate revenue is through monetization. This is where ads can play on their content, and they get a cut of the profits from that ad. They can also make subscriptions paid so they gain revenue from that as well. My number one trick for getting the most out of this app would be to utilize filters in your searches. If you hate ads get YouTube premium

How YouTube Works – Product Features, Responsibility, & Impact

Twitch is a live streaming service that is made for live streaming and content creating. This app is targeted mainly to 18- 25-year-old gamers this app is catered to watching people play games, but you can really live steam anything except for explicit content. Publishers on this app have many ways of generating revenue. They can get donations from viewers, have paid subscriptions, and if they join the partnership program, they make some money as well. My tip for this app is to not subscribe if you don’t have to. Watch for free if you can. Twitch is very similar to YouTube, but it is mostly streaming rather than prerecorded videos. There is also no for kid’s exclusively content like on YouTube and Twitch allows more swearing and nudity.

The Cloud

Adobe Illustrator and One Drive

Adobe Illustrator- This system works the same with or with the cloud. However, there would be some difficulties, all fonts and plugins would have to be manually installed on every computer that you used them on rather than just being linked to your account. You can access your projects in real time anywhere as well as have your fonts and plugins readily available. You do not need to carry an external hard drive with you. This is good if you are especially forgetful like me. No security or privacy concerns because it does not contain any personal information. So, for personal use this is not a security risk. Businesses could be concerned that their proprietary designs could be leaked or accessed if ever had a security breach meaning that the data stolen would be available to whoever stole that data.

One Drive- this application is purely cloud based so there would be no service without the cloud. I can access schoolwork from any device that I sign into using my school credentials. I can also access from anywhere without having to worry about not being able to complete work. Since this application is fully cloud based you do not have to take up any additional storage on your personal device. When an application is fully cloud based there are always areas of privacy and security concerns. When working on a school server as well this can cause some weariness because any information that I might take into my one drive can be seen by anyone in the IT department of the school. If I ever accidentally downloaded malware to my one drive, I would lose a lot of valuable data, and this would cause problems in the future. I also lose that one drive account when I am done with school which can be a problem if I have important projects there and forget to take them out of there.

Cybersecurity

The example that I will be discussing is the ILOVEYOU virus created in 2000 by Onel de Guzman from the Philippines. This letter was sent through email to unsuspecting individuals thinking it was a real love letter or a joke. When people opened this file it sent itself to everyone in the person who opened the files email list sending to more and more people. When this was opened it also destroyed most of the person who opened the files hard drive by either renaming files or deleting files. Many of the people who had their hard drives destroyed did not have backups for their data. So, many people had to explain to bosses why many of their important documents had simply gone missing. This to say the least this virus exposed vulnerabilities on the internet that are still being worked on 20 years later. This virus took Denmark’s parliament offline, forced the UK’s house of commons to shut down their email servers. These are bad things that this caused outside of the US. In the US this virus shut down the Pentagon, AT&T, Ford, and multiple US Army bases. This virus was on track to cause up to 10 billion dollars in damage, but because of the people who stopped this virus spreading. The reason that de Guzman created this program was just to gain windows passwords so that he could gain more time on the internet because at the time in the Philippines internet access was charged by the minute. When de Guzman’s teachers found put this is what he was planning to do he was angry saying that the school does not produce burglars. This would cost de Guzman his degree, but it would not be determined illegal. There were no laws at times that determined what de Guzman did to be a crime. Laws were created soon after this incident making it possible for people who committed acts like this to be persecuted for it, but it could not be applied retroactively. De Guzman was never brought to justice. Many people tried to replicate this virus. This made investigators furious because de Guzman created a bad example for other young internet users. It made people aware that this is something that could happen to anyone it did not just happen to companies and defense agencies. This incident changed the way that the public looked at and took protection against malware.

Understanding Social Media Demographics

1. What are the top three social media platforms of 22-23?

Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp are the top three social media platforms of 2023.

Biggest social media platforms 2023 | Statista

2. Provide a brief summary of how each social site works and why people use it.

Facebook- is used as a traditional social media, meaning that you can follow, or friend other people, create posts, comment, and many other things. You can use this to interact with friends and share together. Many people also use this platform for finding new friends. Many people have also used these platforms for finding love. It is a way to interact with people from all over the world.

YouTube- is a video watching service that you can watch any kind of content that is not explicit on. Anyone can post on YouTube. You can also make it into a profession though that is unlikely. It is a free streaming service essentially, but it does have ads. You can buy a subscription to have no ads, however. You can watch any type of content. Comedy, series, video games, and so much more.

WhatsApp- is an instant messaging service that can also place free international calls. Many people use this to communicate freely with people from all over the world. It is also fully encrypted which means that your data cannot be stolen. It is much harder for this app to be hacked than iMessage or Android messaging.

3. What are demographics and why is it important in social media?

Social media demographics refer to the varying audiences that regularly use social media platforms. It is the best way to target the audience of your choice by knowing which sites your audience is using. In social media it is important because you also want to know who you want to target your marketing towards. A lot of the time you will see Facebook marketing to 30 and older where TikTok markets to a younger audience. This is what demographics are used for.

4. What demographics stand out to me?

That people have an average of 7.1 social media accounts. This is one demographic that shows how much of our lives are taken over by social media and technology. This just shows me how dependent we have become on social media for everything. We are becoming a society that solely socializes through social media instead of actual human interaction. It makes me wonder how long until we no longer have a need for any human interaction.

Top Social Media Statistics And Trends Of 2023 – Forbes Advisor

5. On average how much time do users spend on social media daily, weekly, and monthly?

Daily- 151 minutes or 2.5 hours

Global daily social media usage 2023 | Statista

If we use this daily average, we can assume that weekly people spend 1,057 minutes or 17.6 hours on social media and in a 30-day month that the average person spends 4,530 minutes or 75.5 hours on social media.

6. Which social media site is growing the fastest? Why?

TikTok is the fastest growing social media with a 100% growth in 2 years and continuing to grow. I think this is due to it being an app that you can spend hours on and not realize that you have because the videos are so short. I know this because I have spent hours just watching TikTok after TikTok. Everyone I know uses TikTok and more and more people join every day. I also think that this has to do with the concept of the for you page and that makes it possible for the content to be directly targeted for the viewer. Making it even more impossible to pull away because it is all things that you want to watch.

7. How are the majority of these sites being accessed? PC, Tablet. Mobile Devices?

99% of social media users access social media through their mobile devices that includes mobile phone and tablet.

78% use exclusively their mobile phones.

1.32% exclusively use their desktops.

20% use both mobile phone and desktops.

Know Your Enemy

  1. Scareware is an example of social engineering that scares users into giving away company info or acting against intuition based on fear. Scareware is often done through pop-ups on the user’s screen often warning that files or software has been infected. The pop-up will then prompt you to pay to fix the “issue” and once you have paid it infects your computer with malware programmed to steal your data. https://www.fortinet.com/resources/cyberglossary/scareware#:~:text=A%20common%20scareware%20definition%20is,spread%20through%20spam%20email%20attacks.
  2. Tailgating is a social engineering tactic that allows an attacker to gain physical access to a location with secure data by manipulating the way humans interact with each other. Tailgating is when an attack follows an employee into a key-carded door or secure area only for employees by acting like an employee that maybe forgot their key or badge. For example, one of your employees is asked to work on your data servers in another building, and while on the way there a “new hire” meets up with them and claims they don’t have their badge yet but was told to work with you for the day, without checking with your boss you allow them to follow you into the server room.

  3. Vishing is phishing that happens over the phone. Callers try to extract PII details to use in crimes. The goal is to gain access to accounts or often banking information, however in this case it would be to access our company’s files via a user account. An example of this might be a caller stating they are IT and need a user’s account username and password so they can fix an issue with their account.                                                    https://terranovasecurity.com/what-is-vishing/
  4. Baiting is the low-hanging fruit of the social engineering tactics, literally. Baiting is a method of offering a susceptible employee something they may be interested in. This can be on a disc, USB drive, or other readable media. For example, an attacker leaves a USB drive in the parking lot of the company office, an employee sees this flash drive, and written on it are the words “layoff plan” Obviously she needs to see if she is going to be laid off. She inserts the drive into her PC and is instantly hit with ransomware or a keylogger that has taken over her PC and stolen company data.                                                https://www.knowbe4.com/what-is-social-engineering/
  5. Spear phishing focuses on a small very specific targeted group, typically very vulnerable employees. This attack is to gain access to organization data. Spear phishing is done after research on the targets and is personalized for the victim to make them do something against their best interest. An example of this attack might be to send a CFO an email with the subject invoice or something like that, attach malware that looks like a PDF invoice, and when they click it thinking it’s something they need to record and file it’s a keylogger or malware to access your companies’ data/servers.                           https://www.knowbe4.com/spear-phishing/

Know Yourself

  1. Scareware- Employee education and awareness is the most effective method of preventing scareware. If a person knows what to look for and avoid, they will no longer click on these malicious links and pop-ups.

https://www.fortinet.com/resources/cyberglossary/scareware#:~:text=A%20common%20scareware%20definition%20is,spread%20through%20spam%20email%20attacks.

2. Tailgating- Key cards / badges that are required for access are the most effective way of eliminating this issue, combined with employee awareness this issue can be effectively put down to 0% chance.

https://www.knowbe4.com/what-is-social-engineering/

3. Vishing-Call screening is an easy way to reduce this problem, scanning calls and recognizing when they are coming from a well-known malicious number or are spoofed, as well as educating users to keep PII secure at all times is a great way to reduce this issue.

https://terranovasecurity.com/what-is-vishing/

4. Baiting- Most pcs in modern use do not have DVD drives, effectively eliminating DVDs as a way to bait someone especially at work. USB drives however still exist, luckily IT departments have the access to block data transfer from USB devices to pcs.

https://www.knowbe4.com/what-is-social-engineering/

5. Spear Phishing- Email Filtering and Authentication is also a good combatant, if your servers do most of the heavy lifting in making sure these emails are never delivered it will greatly reduce the amount of phishing within your company.

Develop A Strategy

  1. User Education is vital to making sure that your staff know exactly how to handle and avoid each of these situations. Trainings and seminars fall into this.
  2. Using a firewall as a preventative measure creates a barrier for bad data while allowing good data to be sent to whomever it needs to be sent to.
  3. Disable USB allowance in firmware and domain settings to ensure no one can manually install any bad data into the company system.
  4. Using privacy screens on monitors can be a good way to keep a passerby from seeing sensitive information on another person’s computer.
  5. Making sure that people are following company policies on company devices and having monitoring systems for these devices so if someone is doing something inappropriate it is logged.

Week 6 Where Can You Find Help?

Adobe

This information is very current Adobe updates their information with every new software that they release. Like when they go from 2023 to 2024 software, they will update the information accordingly. Adobe is the company posting the information they are the most knowledgeable on their software because they create it. If any site is going to have the most accurate information about Adobe software, it will be Adobe themselves. The posts are made by Adobe there are no gatekeeping mechanisms in place. People who work for Adobe are the only ones posting these tutorials. I would say that most of what Abode posts are easy to follow and are clear. However, I have had trouble following some of the tutorials they post because at some points they are not as descripted or use the best pictures. I would use them in the future because they are almost always reliable.

Welcome to the Illustrator User Guide (adobe.com)

YouTube

YouTube has a lot of current information as well as a lot of outdated information as long as you are on the lookout you can find information that works for you. I have found some information that is older that is still relevant and information that is older that is no longer relevant. You can also find new information it just depends on what you are looking for. Some people are authorities on YouTube, but that is another thing that you have to look out for on YouTube. I think the most effective way to tell if someone is an authority is the quality of the content. I have found that the better quality the content the better the information is. The way that content is presented to you by YouTube is through an algorithm. It bases the information that it delivers to you based on what you have looked at and searched for in the past. The content is clear sometimes and sometimes not. I have watched tutorials that have no audio and they run through the tutorial, and you have to figure out what is going on for yourself. Other tutorials are full information with no questions needing to be asked. I think again it just depends on the content. I will use this in the future with the knowledge I have, knowing that sometimes the content is not great.

Evanto TUTS+

Everything that I found from was from 2023 so you know that all of the content is fairly new. The posts are made by qualified contributors hired by Evanto TUTS+. All of the information was accurate and well detailed that I saw. I think things that are posted on the front page are all things that have been voted on. At the end of each article there is a little vote thing that says was this information helpful. So, I think that the website takes those votes and puts the stuff that is on the front page is stuff that other people have found helpful. The information that I had saw was accurate, well detailed, and easy to follow. I will definitely be using this information in the future. I wish I would have found this information earlier I feel like it would have been a great asset.

Week 5 Content Management Systems

What is a content management system? Are they only for websites?

A content management system or CMS is a tool that makes it possible for users to create and edit content on website without technical knowledge. Using a CMS makes it possible for people to make a website without coding knowledge. From everything that I have read you only really make websites with CMS, but you can make different types of websites that you can make with CMS. Such as, ecommerce, portfolios and more.

What Is a Content Management System (CMS)? (kinsta.com)

What is the difference between CMS and HTML?

IF you are going to be changing you site frequently and have many pages you would need to change then a CMS is probably the better option. This is due to the fact that with HTML you are creating everything yourself from scratch. It would take a lot more time and money to manage a large site with HTML than with CMS. HTML has the ability to create a page exactly the way you want it, however this takes a lot of time and knowledge. CMS has the ability to make large usable websites quickly it is just more efficient than HTML but might not be as exact as HTML. CMS can also be cheaper than HTML depending on the software you are using for CMS. HTML has to be made by hand and managed by someone who knows how to manage HTML, so hiring someone for this may cost you more money in the long run.

CMS vs HTML: What Are the Advantages of each? – Core dna

How do CMS impact the web design industry? Are CMS taking jobs from web developers?

CMS can help the web design industry by making website creation more accessible for designers. CMS makes it easier for web designers to make their vision appear on the web page. Since web designers have the power to create, they can make the sites themselves if they are properly trained on the CMS they are using. CMS are not taking jobs from web developers but changing the way the job is done. CMS makes a web developers job easier by making it possible to create and edit websites quickly and efficiently. Instead of having to create everything by hand they are able to create in a simpler way.

From June to December of 1980, he worked for a company called CERN this is where he created a program for himself called Enquire. This software allowed Berners-Lee to have files on a server that had a links to other files on the server. This allowed him to access files from other files. This came to be known as hypertext. This hypertext led to the introduction of the idea of a global hypertext. this would go on to become what is known as the world wide web. Which is what Berners-Lee is most known for.
