- Do people access the internet more with their mobile devices, or with desktops?
A study in 2019 revealed that the number of people using their mobile phones to browse the web had gone up a significant amount, compared to a study done in 2013. The numbers shot up from right about 16% to nearly half the world’s internet-browsing being made from mobile devices. The site does note that the mobile devices counted were only phones, and did not include things like tablets and other hand-helds. https://www.broadbandsearch.net/blog/mobile-desktop-internet-usage-statistics
- Who owns the World Wide Web?
That’s a tricky topic. I’d love to play some X-Files music and delve into a fantastic conspiracy about Lizard-People and the Illuminati, but unfortunately, control of our internets does not boil down to one organization or power. While there is a certain amount of monitoring throughout different websites, no one power owns the internet in its’ entirety. There is no centralized force that we must report to before posting anything to the web. However, content is controlled by a set of laws and regulations that people who own websites must comply with, so perhaps it could be said that, through power of law, the government “owns” the information that we are allowed to see.

- Who was Tim Berners Lee and what did he do that was important?
Tim Berners Lee was actually the subject of the research into the last topic! According to the site I used, he was the inventor of the World Wide Web in 1989. Well, he invented the notion of it in 1989, but did not dive into development until 1990, when he created three fundamental “languages” of the Web. They were HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), Uniform Resource Identifier, (URIs!) to identify specific resources from the web, and HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) which is used to retrieve linked sources from the web. In addition to producing these “languages”, Lee also developed the first web page browser and the first server. All in the span of a single year! Without Tim Berners Lee, we would very likely not have the internet that we do today.

- What does SEO stand for? Why would managers/businesses be concerned with it?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and is defined as “Optimizing websites to increase the amount and quality of targeted organic traffic from ranking search engines.” Based on the definition, I can infer that managers and business owners should be concerned about it because their information depends wholly on the amount of people looking them up. Larger businesses see more success because, naturally, more people know about them. However, for small businesses, not having that advertisement space could be a detriment.
- What is Dynamic content?
Dynamic content, in the context of the World Wide Web, describes content that changes constantly or regularly based on user interactions.
- What is a CMS, and which one do we work with in DMD 107?
A Content Management System (CMS) is a system that allows you to build a web page without having to know coding. The one we work with is WordPress, where we created our blogs.
- What is a YouTube channel and who would want to have one?
A YouTube channel is a forum where uploaders post video content that can cover most topics under the sun. Anyone who wants to share their thoughts, their work, or just entertain people is someone who makes a good candidate for creating their own YouTube Channel. They can also be for educational purposes (I had to make one of my own for my Speech 100 course!)
