A content management system is software that allows users to create, manage, and modify content on a website. By using a CMS (Content Management System), users can create digital content, organize, and structure content, edit a website with others, and design a website’s appearance without directly coding a website. Publishing, format management, revision control, indexing, search, and retrieval are included in most content management systems. A content management application allows users to add and manage content on a website. A content delivery application stores the content put into the content management application and makes it visible to visitors of the website. Content management systems can also be used for functions such as storing images or document management. 

Websites can be built using a CMS or coded using HTML or CCS. When building a website using a CMS, users create and manage the website using an admin panel. Programs such as CSS have been added to work with HTML. Websites made using HTML/CSS are often more secure and give developers more control over website design. HTML websites load faster and have higher SEO. Several coding languages can be integrated into a website coded using HTML. However, it takes longer to develop a website using HTML/CSS and all characters must be in place to properly load an HTML/CSS website. As code is updated, older versions of HTML websites may have decreased SEO. CMS websites can be edited through the admin panel through any computer. Website templates are available through content management systems. Add-ons allow CMS websites to have blogging, corporate, and eCommerce functionalities. Website URL, title, and metatags can be altered through CMS add-ons. However, there are limitations to websites built using a content management system. Some knowledge of HTML and CCS is necessary to create significant changes to the website. For websites that will not frequently change, it would be practical to code the website using HTML/CCS. However, for websites that are frequently updated, the current best practice would be to create a website using a content management system. This is because content management systems allow for efficient page creation, editing, and publishing. 

Content management systems have impacted the web development industry. The common use of content management systems has caused an increase in the use of website templates and website builders. The use of content management systems has made the creation of websites faster and easier than before. While content management systems reduce the need for web developers to create websites using HTML, many web developers can use content management systems to further develop websites. It has become necessary for web developers to create content management systems. Many web developers use content management systems and website builder tools to create websites that meet the needs of clients. While content management systems reduce the need for web developers to create websites using HTML, many web developers have used content management systems as well as other advanced programs to develop websites that are customized to their clients.
