Content Management Systems

1.Content Management Systems

A Content Management System, or CMS, is a software system that allows people to create and manage a website without needing any prior knowledge about web design or coding. A CMS is only for creating websites, although these websites can be used for different purposes. The most popular use of a CMS is for creating a blog.

2. CMS vs. Coding

Websites can be created through a content management system or coding by hand using HTML/CSS. Deciding which to use depends on the type of website being built and the person building the website. Hand coding gives you a lot more freedom to create a website than a CMS. You’re able to design the website however you want, there are no restrictions. It gives you the ability to make it more unique and personalized. On the downside, coding is a lot more time consuming then using a CMS. There is also a bigger chance for mistakes to be made which can take up even more time. Also, coding takes a while to learn and become familiar with. Beginners should start with using a CMS because no prior knowledge for website design is needed. A CMS is a lot quicker than coding because there are different themes and templates you can use. No errors will occur so you won’t have to take time to fix those. Although using a CMS is more convenient, there are a lot of restrictions for how you’re able to build your website. You’re limited to what you can do and don’t have the freedom you would with coding.

The best way to create a website is to use both a CMS and hand coding. Use a CMS first to get the basic layout of your website before using hand coding to add details wherever necessary.

3. CMSs in the Web Design Industry

CMSs allow customers to create websites easily and at a decent price. Because of this, a lot of people are choosing to use a CMS over hiring a web developer. Although, even with the use of CMSs, the web design industry isn’t “dying,” just changing. Big companies will still use web designers to make their websites for unique from others. If everyone chooses to use a CMS, a lot of websites would start looking the same, only slightly different. The use of CMSs means that web developers need to be more creative. They need to improve their skills and stand out to show that there is still a need for web developers and not just a CMS.
