The World Wide Web

The World Wide Web, or WWW, has changed a lot since it was invented in 1989 by computer scientist, Tim Berners Lee. The internet already existed and consisted of computers that were connected to one other. There was no way to share information between these computers, until Berners Lee’s invention which made this possible. Now, we’re able to access all kinds of information through programs and websites.

Everyday, people are adding more content to the internet, although no one actually controls the WWW. Technically, we all control it. We as users are providing the information put onto the web so we are considered to control the internet. For example, people share content on the internet through blogs. A blog is a website in which someone shares personal, “written content.” People use blogs as a way to communicate to people and provide information and entertainment. Another example is a youtube channel. A youtube channel is almost like a blog but in video form. It’s a platform for people to create videos and interact with their viewers. Someone might start a youtube channel as a hobby. Making videos can be a lot of fun for some people while also providing entertainment for viewers.

Today, more people are accessing the internet using a mobile device rather than a desktop computer. Mobile devices allow users to access the internet anywhere at any time. The internet can travel with people, making it more accessible. Mobile internet is increasing as the majority of people have access to a mobile phone or tablet.

Websites are the main source of information on the World Wide Web. Adding information to the internet has become easier with the tools and programs we have access to today. One of these tools include a content management system, or CMS, which is a software system that allows people to easily create and manage a website. Examples of these software systems include WordPress (the website I’m currently using), Squarespace, Wix, Joomla!, and many others. Secondly, a responsive website design gives the ability for websites to change and adapt to different sizes of screens. This allows designers to make necessary adjustments without designing a new layout for every type of screen. This is much faster and easier than having to create a layout that complies with every device. Another helpful tool is a search engine optimization, or SEO, which makes your website show up when users search for information related to the content on your website. Without SEO, your website may not be as successful. If someone searches in Google and your website shows up on the 16th page, there’s a really high chance the user won’t look at your website. By using SEO, your website will be accessed by more users and therefore be more successful. There is also a way to make websites more enjoyable for users by using dynamic content. Dynamic content is “web content that changes based on the behavior, preferences, and interests of the user.” The point is to provide the user with content that will best interest them.

The world wide web has evolved significantly since being created and will continue to change and advance in the future.
