Recent Evolution of the Web

  1. Today, do more people access the web using computers or mobile devices? Provide a resource that supports your answer.

According to the Pew Research Center “37% of Americans now go online mostly using a smartphone…”. This number seems a little small, but I would say yes, most people do because their mobile devices is far more convent when out and about. Even my dad who strongly dislikes technology will still use a cell phone instead of a laptop, if he needs to internet.

  1. Who controls the World Wide Web? What is it made up of?

According to W3C, “The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is an international community where Member organizations, a full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards. Led by Web inventor and Director Tim Berners-Lee and CEO Jeffrey Jaffe, W3C’s mission is to lead the Web to its full potential.” The web is kind of like a big company that everyone uses one way or another for just about anything. I think the idea is that it’s here for anyone to use for whatever they need but at the same time it can be kind of scary, considering the fact that it has access to almost all of our personal information.

  1. Who is Tim Berners Lee? What is he best known for?

His full title is Sir Tim Berners-Lee, he was knighted my Queen Elizabeth II is 2004. He is a British computer scientist and is mostly credited for the invention of the World Wide Web, which is what he is most known for.

  1. What is a blog? What is it used for?

A blog is a web page or another social media site that is used to discuss and publish news or information.

  1. What is a “responsive” website design?

According to Smashing Magazine, “Responsive Web design is the approach that suggests that design and development should respond to the user’s behavior and environment based on screen size, platform and orientation.” When you make a responsive web design you are basically making it user friendly for all types of devices and different types of people.

  1. Why are “responsive” website designs necessary?

So the website is available to more people on more devices. You are creating a better experience for the user by making the website do the work itself instead of making the user doing it.

  1. What is SEO, and why should website owners/managers be concerned with SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It describes the process used to enhance a websites spot on a search engine, like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Owners/managers should be very concerned with it because without it their site may never be seen.

  1. What is dynamic content?

“Dynamic content is defined as any digital or online content that changes based on data, user behavior and preferences. This can be text, audio or video format content.” It’s the ads on a website that change every little bit and are different per person.

  1. What is a content management system? You work with one, what is its name?

A content management system, aka CMS, is a software system that helps its users run a website without the need of specific technical knowledge. WordPress and u.cotc.edu are examples of that and u.cotc.edu is the one I work with for school.

  1. What is a YouTube channel? Who might want to start one?

Basically, people will create one to record something they want to say for many different reasons, it’s something anyone can subscribe to and/or watch. Anyone can start one, but a business could start one to get the word out and to attract customers. You can make money if you have enough people to subscribe and to watch your videos .
