demographics

Facebook, Instagram, and then pinterest were the top three social media sites in 2021 to 2022. Facebook is a social media site used primarily for business, networking, and personal use. People use it for businesses to market themselves, sell their products and gain popularity. People use it for personal use to post about their lives, share stuff to family and friends. Demographics are the population/statistics of certain groups within a community. It is important to know demographics based on who you are trying to attract; if your business is marketed to younger generations, than you’d want to take your business primarily to Instagram as the demographic of younger people is higher there. In Facebook for example, the demographic you will typically see is older, married women, while Instagram is typically younger, single women. It has been found that PER DAY, Instagram users spend 29 minutes on the social media site daily. The current fastest growing social media network is TikTok. It became really popular within teenagers and preteens, and young adults saw that it was popular amongst young people so in a way to hold onto their youth, they joined; soon middle-aged adults joined and so on and so forth. Most people access these sites through their phones out of convenience.

Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality is a relatively new form of technology that tracks your movement and eye coordination to simulate a 3D experience, to look around yourself and see a much larger, virtual world through a headset. Through my own use of VR, I have found that because of the large bandwidth that the VR headset requires, it needs 5G to be able to function to its best capacity. There is a lot of discourse about who invented the first Virtual Reality Console/simulator, but the one who can be traced easiest would most likely be Jaren Lanier in the mid-1980’s, developing the goggles and gloves needed to create the first simulation. Virtual Reality solves several problems, one being for those that struggle socially; virtual reality has helped thousands reach out into simulated parks, chatrooms and such to create connections with those that they may not be able to do in person due to social inabilities. Another thing that VR has helped in the past few years is with businesses; with the Coronavirus shutting down thousands of businesses, VR creates a new means of having sit-down meetings with employees that may not be able to have happened had VR not been around. A bigger drawback that easily comes with VR is a loss of touch with reality; spending so much time in a simulated world, going out and having a busy life when in all reality you are sitting in your rooms for hours on end. Unlike other gaming consoles, like Play Station or XBOX, you cannot look away and see your room; when you have the headset on, all you can see is the screen around you. It can cause a HUGE disconnection from reality. In the past few years, VR technology has gained lots of popularity, taking people away from real world interactions and replacing them with virtual, simulated ones.

Mobile Apps

One of the popular apps I will be referencing is Instagram. Instagram is a social media app used to share your life with the world, showcase your business and products in a more current way, create inspirational posts to lift others up, create political campaigns and so much more. The most popular revenue streams that publishers can use would probably be photo ads; ads that appear in users feed/explore page with direct links to the publishers shop. Another common way to gain money is through donations on your story, or links in your biography that lead to the publishers shop/means of making money. To get the most out of this app, the best thing I can recommend is posting things that follow current trends, no matter what your product/content revolves around, make it follow a certain trend or aesthetic to appeal to the larger, public eye amongst Instagram. Gain a following through that trend, and once your following starts to get larger and you have a consistent audience, begin showcasing your work with prices alongside them; now that your following is large enough and your work appeals to the community, you are more likely to get more out of the app.

The other more popular app I will be referring to is Twitch. Twitch is a video streaming app for creators to stream themselves doing podcasts, playing popular video games, doing stunts, and an endless amount of other things. The target audience for Twitch users is people of both genders, typically ranging between the teenagers to young adults; in all honesty though, Twitch is and can be used by people of all ages. Revenue is typically made through streams; the more streams a streamer gets on Twitch, the more money they make. People make donations throughout the streams, which a small portion gets taken by Twitch and then the rest goes on to the streamer. To get a larger amount of viewers, the best advice that can be given is make yourself stand out, people like to watch people that are different from the rest, following more obscure trends.
