A Look at Two Popular Mobile Apps

According to data gathered by Statista, a global data and business intelligence platform that collects statistics, reports and insights; Facebook and Instagram were the most popular apps worldwide as of March 2024. The Facebook app had 59 million downloads and the Instagram app had 58 million.

Facebook is one of the earliest and largest social media platforms available today. Facebook was established in 2004 by Mark Zuckerburg and is now worth upwards of $912 billion. There are an estimated 3 billion monthly active users and that number only continues to grow. Facebook allows users to create free profiles to connect with friends, family and neighbors. Users can make posts, pictures, videos and articles from other parts of the web. They have the ability to “like”, comment on and share other users’ posts. They can also do live streamed chats and create short-form videos. Users send each other friend requests in order to view each other’s profiles. There are also Facebook groups, where people with shared interests post together and share posts.

As of January 2023, Facebook’s largest demographic of users was men aged 25-34, which accounts for 18.4% of the global user base. The second largest group is men aged 18-24 at 13.5%. Ultimately, 56.7% of Facebook’s user base are men, outweighing the 43.3% female users. 6.6% of all users are aged 65+. Facebook remains fairly unpopular with kids aged 13-17 at 4.8% of the user base. From a geographical standpoint, the United States, India and Brazil have the largest group of active users. India remains the largest audience with a whopping 366 million users. All in all, an average of 3.065 billion users visit Facebook daily.

The second most popular social media platform around the globe is Instagram, a photo and video sharing app. Instagram was established by Kevin Systrom in 2010, and was eventually purchased by Facebook’s parent company Meta in 2012. There are an estimated 2 million monthly active Instagram users. Instagram users can upload, edit and share pictures and videos for their friends and other audiences. Users create and posts, comment and “like” other users’ content, and message one another. Instagram’s algorithm recommends content on a user’s main page based on their activity and preferences.

Instagram’s largest user demographic is young adults, aged 18-24, followed very close by adults aged 25-34. These users account for nearly 62% of the total user base. There is a near even split of male and female users, at 51.8% male to 48.2% female. 8% of users are kids aged 13-17, double that of Facebook’s number. The fast-paced nature of Instagram’s video and picture sharing is more appealing to younger people overall. Geographically speaking, much like Facebook, India and the United States have the greatest number of users, with India leading at 229.5 million users. On average, Instagram has 500 million daily visitors.
