In 2024, the internet is largely accessed via mobile devices. This shift began with the rise of smartphones, and now mobile technology dominates internet access. A 2021 U.S. Census Bureau report noted that 90% of households owned smartphones, compared to 81% owning laptops or desktop computers. (Computer and Internet Use in the United States: 2021, 2024)
The widespread availability of mobile devices and their convenience for on-the-go access have driven this trend, making smartphones the primary method of internet access for many.
Who controls the World Wide Web?
The World Wide Web isn’t controlled by any single entity. It is a decentralized system composed of numerous organizations, companies, and individuals managing different aspects. For example, domain names, network infrastructure, and web standards are managed collaboratively. The web operates on a vast network of privately and publicly owned computers, interconnected globally without a central authority. This distribution of ownership helps ensure freedom of information but also creates complexities in governance.
The web consists of three main elements:
- URL (Uniform Resource Locator): the addressing system to locate resources.
- HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol): the communication system enabling data exchange between computers.

Who is Tim Berners-Lee?
According to the Internet Hall of Fame, Tim Berners-Lee is widely known as the inventor of the World Wide Web. His creation transformed the internet from a static data repository into a dynamic platform for communication and commerce. A CMS is a software platform that allows users to build and manage websites without needing extensive coding knowledge. Popular CMS platforms like WordPress are widely used because they simplify the process of creating dynamic, responsive websites .
What is a YouTube channel?
A YouTube channel is a dedicated space where users can upload, manage, and share videos. YouTube channels are useful for creators, businesses, and individuals who want to share content with a global audience and build a following on the platform.
