Wading through the Web

Today we will be discussing the wonders of the world wide web. Who created it, who runs it, and what kind of everyday content makes it great. Let’s start from the beginning. Back in 1989, a scientist named Tim Berners Lee invented the internet. Currently, he is the director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that controls the internet. The W3C is an international community made up of members of the public, a full-time staff, and member organizations that all develop web standards. “Web for All, Web on Everything” the design principles of the W3C team enables them to push for equality and accessibility for all people to have access to the world wide web. Creating accessible web on all devices makes it a lot easier for everyone to be connected. With the WWW  being so readily available anywhere and everywhere, the number of people accessing it via a mobile device has increased substantially. In 2019 3.986 million unique mobile users accessed the internet.  In the same year, the grand total of active users was 4.388 million. This means close to 90% of the people using the WWW were doing so with a mobile device. That is absolutely HUGE!

Something that Tim Berners Lee would be proud of in his early days is blog posting. The early internet was mostly comprised of text pages filled with information (web 1.o). Blogs are conversation style web pages that are regularly updated by one person or a small collaborative group. Blogs are generally used as a type of journal. But they can also be used for sharing information with niche groups. For example there are tons of blogs dedicated to being a mom, crafting groups, or even photography techniques. Blogging can become be a form of income. Affiliate link clicks can lead to large money pulls. And by using good SEO tactics, you can increase blog traffic substantially, increasing the link clicks even more. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) helps direct potential readers or customers to your website. Technical SEO is what helps search engines show your website at the top of searches. By using descriptive titles and alt image descriptions, you are more likely to be picked up by search engine crawlers. Backlinking with other well-known blogs can also improve your rank in search results and viewer count. It shows a sign of trust that your web blog provides quality information and others find it interesting. This blog, is possible by using a Content Management System (CMS). WordPress is a platform that handles the basic infrastructure of website building so you can easily make blog posts and pages.  If CMS were not available an entire HTML file would need to be written and uploaded to a server to create a website. CMS makes web publishing accessible to everyone.

On the opposite end of the spectrum from a text filled post is video creation. Youtube is a website in which content creators can upload videos to a channel then organize those videos into categories based on dates or specific topics. If you can amass a large following on Youtube, companies can offer you to run their ads to earn revenue during your videos. Youtube videos also rank very high on Google searches. So the likely-hood of them being seen is much higher if you are posting videos about topics that people are interested in. Gaming Youtube channels are HUGE right now. Young kids and adults alike often need help beating a particular part of a game and look for video gameplay to assist their adventures. Have you ever been on Youtube and noticed that it’s suggesting videos based on previous content that you have watched? That’s an example of dynamic content! Dynamic content is all over the web. You see it in title-based search engine results, pop up ads, and even email campaigns. Dynamic content is everywhere and helps make our internet browsing more personal.

With all this amazing content available, web users want to take it on the go. Mobile internet browsing was just a futuristic unobtainable dream just 30 years ago. Responsive web design development responds to its user based on screen size, platform, and orientation. A mix of flexible layout grids, images, and the use of intelligent CSS allows the webpage design to accommodate different screen sizes. Moving from a desktop computer to an iPhone there should be little to no change in the web page design.  Responsive web is important because it increases traffic by making mobile use easier, it lowers web maintenance and costs, improves SEO efforts, and provides a seamless experience that adapts to screen size. All around responsive web design increases the usability of the WWW.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your post this week, Hayley! You clearly did a lot of research into these areas… the post itself is well written and I see a lot of your personality coming out through the writing. It’s nice to get to know you in this way. Keep up the great work!

    1. I am actually really relieved to hear that. I worked on this throughout the week, going back to edit after taking a break away multiple times. I felt like I struggled to get everything answered in a way that flowed decently well for the post. It was quite shocking to learn the internet was actually brought into fruition the year before I was born. I don’t remember the internet being prominent until I was in middle school. I’m sure it was used regularly by some, but for me a lower-middle-class child, I know we did not have a computer at home until around that time. The dial-up connection was still very prominent and outrageously slow! I remember the upgrade to DSL and being so very excited that downloading songs on Napster wouldn’t be an all-day process.
