1.

Briefly define what we mean by “content management system.” Is it just for websites?

A Content Management System (CMS, for short) is a tool that handles all the basic infrastructure, allowing you to do what you need without having to code. There are two common versions of it: Enterprise Content Management (ECM) and Web Content Management (WCM). WCM is what lets you make a website with little to no code. And ECM is used by companies as a way of managing information across the organization.

2.

Compare and contrast building a website using a CMS and coding a website by hand using HTML/CSS. What are the benefits and drawbacks of each? What is the current best practice when it comes to making a website?

Using a CMS lets you focus on the creative and more forward-looking features of the website by allowing you to create without much or any code. But at the same time, each CMS has its own limits. Some don’t let you customize as much as you need, and some bury you in the weeds by letting too much customization.

And in the case of hand-coding a website, it buries you in the weeds as well. You have to build everything from the ground up, which makes it slower. But at the same time, it lets you detail every aspect of your site, down to the very last pixel.

But either of these can be used to create your dream website. What is and isn’t best practice only depends on your time and money constraints. As well as knowledge of coding, but that can be learned with time.

3.

How do CMSs impact the web design industry? Are they taking away jobs from web developers?

CMSs have created a new market in the web design industry. They allow people to create websites with a low budget. Whereas before, they couldn’t afford to hire a web developer to code them a website. It may put some out of jobs, but it’ll also allow more opportunities for those who can make use of CMSs.
