Social Media Demographics
1.
What were the top three social media sites, in terms of traffic, in 22-23? List them in order of popularity.
![]()
As of 2023, the most trafficked site is Facebook with almost 3 billion monthly active users. Second is YouTube with 2.5 billion active users. And in 3rd place is a close race between Instagram and WhatsApp at around 2 billion monthly users, but I’m going to focus on Instagram for today.
2.
Provide a brief summary of how each social media site works and why people use it.
![]()
Facebook is a platform in which you can create posts, add friends, and message other people. Facebook is like a community, a community that you can share mundane everyday things with. It’s a community that you can help foster with your friends.
Youtube
YouTube is a platform where you can post videos, watch videos, and comment on other people’s videos. It’s a large platform that people use to market, entertain, and make a living from. It’s an easy-to-use site that provides endless entertainment.
Instagram is a platform where you can post short-form content, share daily updates with friends via the story feature, and message friends. It’s an app/website that provides endless entertainment and a constant connection with people you know.
3.
What are “demographics” and why are they important in social media?
![]()
Demographics refers to statistical data about groups of users, such as gender, interests, location, etc. This plays a big role in social media, since the algorithm uses this data to show personalized content to different demographics. And if you are a content creator, it’s useful to know your demographic. Knowing your demographic allows you to understand why some content fails and some succeeds.
4.
Explain any demographics that stand out among the three social media sites you listed above. (More popular with a specific age group, the majority of users are male or female, married or single, employees or self-employed, etc.)
![]()
One thing about Facebook’s demographic is that it is surprisingly weighted towards male users, with about 57% of users being male. YouTube is interestingly used by 95 percent of teenagers, which is a demographic that I wouldn’t have expected to be so high. Instagram’s demographic is nearly 50/50 when it comes to gender, which is surprisingly balanced compared to YouTube and Facebook.
5.
On average, how much time do users spend on each social media site during a day, week or month?
![]()
Facebook’s users are on the platform for 30 minutes a day. YouTube users are spending 49 minutes a day watching videos on YouTube. Instagram’s users, on the other hand, are spending 34 minutes every day scrolling and texting.
6.
Which of the three social media networks is growing the fastest? Why do you think that is?
![]()
Out of the top 3, Instagram is growing the fastest, and I can see why it is. It’s a platform that keeps innovating and improving. It has alot of content for every demographic, such as notes, stories, reels, threads integration, and much more.
7.
How are the majority of visitors accessing these three sites (computer, mobile device, tablet)?
![]()
It looks like mobile is the main way that the majority of users visit Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.
