DUOLINGO:

Duolingo is a free language education mobile app with bite-sized lessons for over 40 language courses. Duolingo teaches its users to read, write, and speak nearly any given language regardless of their experience or skill level. As the world’s most downloaded education app, Duolingo can be used for various reasons. While most individuals use Duolingo to learn languages from scratch, many users also use the app to sharpen their skills. Additionally, many middle or high school students enrolled in a language course use Duolingo (whether it be in their own free time or as a class resource).

As a mobile education app, Duolingo generally markets to a younger audience. According to writer Ch Daniel of SignHouse, “Duolingo’s most targeted market audience is younger people between ages 16 to 22 who wish to learn a new language.” Regarding the gender of their target audience, Duolingo’s user demography is split 50/50 down the middle. As reported by Similarweb.com, Duilingo’s audience is 48.92% male and 51.08% female. As a free mobile app, Duolingo generates most of its revenue through advertisements and premium prescriptions.

SPOTIFY:

Spotify is a free digital music streaming service, spanning various devices. The application gives its users access to millions of songs and an endless number of genres to choose from. Mobile users with a premium subscription can download songs, create playlists with other users, and stream saved music & podcasts regardless of location. As a web player, Spotify is often used to stream music and podcasts on the go. Many use Spotify to play music while they study, on plane rides, or in the car on their way to work.

Spotify is marketed mainly towards young adults ages 18-24. Spotify’s target demographic is 58.95% male and 41.05% female. The “The Brand Hopper” states that Spotify generates its revenue through, and I quote, “premium subscriptions, advertising, artist and label partnerships, licensing deals, brand collaborations, and podcast advertising.” Spotify has tripled its revenue in the past five years, generating around 11.5 billion euros in 2022. Created over ten years ago, users have found/made many tips and tricks to get the most out of Spotify. For example, non-premium users tired of getting interrupted by ads can close out of the app. That way, the Mobile App will automatically skip the ad as it pops up once you open it again.
