Understanding Social Media Demographics
Demographics are something that is really important for websites/media platforms. It helps to know the varying audiences that use their site or app, they take this to learn strategy in order to help their site or app grow and reach new audiences. Social media sites are becoming a new normal mainly accessed through mobile devices, the top three being Facebook (2.74B Users), YouTube (2.291B Users), and WhatsApp (2.0B Users). Each one of these platforms is listed and accompanied by its demographics.
Facebook is a site where you can connect with family and friends online, you can post daily or whenever you’d like to give an update about your life. You are able to comment on posts and share posts, thus connecting you with the people you are friends with on the platform. “The largest demographic group of Facebook users is between the ages of 25 and 35 years. 18.8% are male, and 12.8% of the population are female. Around seven-in-ten U.S. adults (69%) use Facebook. Seniors aged 65+ are the smallest demographic group on Facebook (4.8%).” (Aslam, 2022).
YouTube is a site where you can upload, watch, and share videos. Many have started to upload videos as a way to make a career out of it and ultimately get paid by the site. There are different genres to each video, you can find just about every category of video on the platform and comment below each one. “53.9% of global YouTube users are male. 46.1% of global YouTube users are female. 81% of U.S. adults use YouTube. 82% of U.S. male adults use YouTube.” (Aslam, 2017).
WhatsApp is a free, multiplatform (meaning for different devices) messaging app that lets you make video and voice calls, send text messages, and more all with just a Wi-Fi connection. This comes in handy when you do not have an activated cell phone and that way you are still able to call or text people, to connect with them. “As of 2020, WhatsApp had a majority (27%) of its users aged between 26 and 35 years. The age bracket of 15 to 25 year-old Americans contributed to 19% of WhatsApp users while the 36 to 45 years-old bracket contributed to 20%. Those aged between 46 and 55 years represented 17% of the users.” (ThinkImpact, 2021).
With social media, the usage of it grows more and more. “US adults use media for an average of 12 hours and 9 minutes per day.” (Georgiev, 2022). Which is a very long time, more than half a day is spent on social media. That’s just average. According to Georgiev on average, users spend 58 minutes per day on Facebook, YouTube has 30 million active users daily, and 43 billion messages are sent every day on WhatsApp.
With social media growing as fast as it is, I feel like YouTube is growing the fastest. I think the more people think they can get famous by being a content creator, along with having a job making videos for YouTube. The more that it will grow and become popular.
