Evolution of the Web
Today, mobile devices have grown to dominate the social media world, this also includes web browsing – I’m sure you have had a moment where you needed to look something up but, you did not have a computer readily available so you used your cell phone. “Mobile devices drove 61% of visits to U.S. websites in 2020, up from 57% in 2019. Desktops were responsible for 35.7% of all visits in 2020, and tablets drove the remaining 3.3% of visitors.” (Enge, 2021). Even though computers are still being used for web browsing, mobile devices still drive up nearly 5% more than previous years. The World Wide Web is a big place, so who owns it? Actually, no one person, organization or government owns nor controls the big W.W.W. It is made up of many voluntarily autonomous networks, it comes from network settings and enforces its own policies depending on the site you currently use. The W.W.W was created by Tim Berners-Lee. “Berners-Lee wrote the software for the first Web server (the central repository for the files to be shared) and the first Web client, or “browser” (the program to access and display files retrieved from the server), between October 1990 and the summer of 1991.” (Dennis, 2022). Although it was not fully what we have today, Berners-Lee had a great start on something we all use today. There are different types of websites, there are blogs, corporate, eCommerce, etc. Quite like the one I am currently writing on, this would be considered a blog. Blogs are regularly updated sites that can be used for personal or sometimes business use. (Forsey, 2020). This also uses responsive web design; “Responsive web design (RWD) is a web development approach that creates dynamic changes to the appearance of a website, depending on the screen size and orientation of the device being used to view it.” (Schade, 2014). This helps with formatting a website and also creating it as your own, RWD helps with determining how the website will appear and make sure that a website looks the same on a mobile and computer device. With starting a website, many website owners/managers get concerned with SEO. “SEO stands for Search engine optimization. It is a set of rules for optimizing your website so that it can achieve higher rankings in search engines’ organic results.” (Chris, 2021). SEO helps bring customers or people to your website and organizes traffic flow to look at the website you own/manage. The big concern is there could be too much money lost and a lot of competition; which can cause a website owner/manager to falter whenever a problem happens. With a website you can also see dynamic content, “dynamic content is a web-page or email component that changes.” (Serrano, 2021). This also means you can look at all the changes based on user data or behavior that happens on the site. I also use a CMS, which is what this post is currently on called WordPress. “A content management system, often abbreviated as CMS, is software that helps users create, manage, and modify content on a website without the need for specialized technical knowledge.” (Kinsta, 2021). A CMS is something that you can create a website without having all the confusing code from scratch and is a really easy thing to use once you start. Finally, another platform that is currently rising is YouTube – which is a video platform where digital content creators can share their own videos about themselves, gaming, news, and many more.
