Content Management Systems
One may ask what is a content management system (CMS for short)? According to Wix.com, “… a CMS is an application web producers use to create and manage content for a website without using code.” Basically, it is software that helps build websites utilizing: imagery, colors, words, and the organization of the webpage, to share information clearly to the viewer. A CMS can be easily created and edited when it comes to both written content and visualization without needing a lot of technical skills. Some of the pros for using a CMS are: the ease of both the creation of the webpage as well as it’s maintenance, one does not have to know how to write in code, and it reduces the cost of maintenance to keep up on a website. Some of the cons for a CMS system are: limited offered designs, the site is unusable during any type of maintenance, and limiting task software. CMS can be used for other things other than websites. They can be used for email campaigns as well as marketing materials.
Another way to create a website is to use the traditional HTML/CSS. However, this form is for advanced software developers that design by using a programming language such as Python or SQL. In other words, one has to know how to write in code. If your skills are that advanced, I’ll list some pros and cons next and you can continue reading. According to ellow.io, some of the pros for the traditional HTML web design are: the browser is compatible with others such as Chrome and Safari, etc., it’s cost effective because one does not need to purchase licensing, and it loads quickly. Some of the cons for a HTML web design are: lengthy codes can lead to challenges, limited security, can lead to data, hacking, and it “is a static language.”ellow.io
With different ways to create a webpage, I’m not convinced there is only one correct best practice when creating a website. As mentioned earlier, there are pros and cons to both. I believe it depends upon one’s technical abilities, the amount of content and the intent for which it is being created. As for whether I believe that CMS are having a negative impact on the web design industry, my answer is no. The reason I say no is because a CMS is created by those that do understand how to write code to make things manageable for those who do not have those skills. There is always going to be a need for those that have advanced skills.
